Nutrition as Preventive Care
We believe that access to fresh, nutritious food is a fundamental part of healthcare and a powerful tool in preventing and managing chronic diseases in rural communities.
Equity Through Access
We are committed to dismantling barriers to healthy food by prioritizing those most affected by food insecurity, ensuring that every individual has the opportunity to achieve better health through nutrition.
Community-Centered Health
We strengthen local food systems and foster partnerships between healthcare providers, farmers, and community organizations to create sustainable, place-based solutions that promote wellness and resilience.

Health
Food is Medicine
Food is Medicine is a transformative GRRO initiative that integrates access to fresh, healthy foods into the continuum of care for rural communities. Recognizing nutrition as a foundational element of health, this program partners with healthcare providers to connect patients—especially those facing chronic diseases and food insecurity—with nutrient-rich food resources. By addressing social determinants of health through local food systems, Food is Medicine not only supports recovery and prevention but also empowers communities to thrive through sustainable, equitable access to wellness.
As one of 10 community-based Food is Medicine programs selected by the Blue Cross NC Foundation, GRRO is part of a statewide initiative supported by more than $6 million in investment. These programs range from grassroots efforts in historically under-resourced neighborhoods to the nation’s largest produce prescription program, with a footprint that spans all of North Carolina. Through this support, GRRO is helping to reshape rural health by addressing the social determinants of health and empowering communities with sustainable, equitable access to wellness.
